Previously Known as Sun River Saddlery

Jordan Knudsen found a passion for the backcountry when he got to Montana in 2001 and has been acquiring skills and knowledge to support it ever since.

After becoming a licensed backcountry guide in 2004 Jordan saw the opportunity to build high quality pack saddles and leather equipment for the people that enjoy the trails as much as he does.

After years spent packing horses and mules and learning tricks from the various outfitters he guided for Jordan has designed a decker pack saddle that has been known for its extraordinary attention to detail and high quality materials.

Sun River Saddlery was previously owned and operated by Jordan and his ex-wife who have since parted ways personally and professionally.   After a few years hiatus from leatherwork Jordan has rebuilt his shop and is excited to be offering Decker pack saddles along with other leather work and back country supplies.

Decker pack saddles are currently available for pre-order and will be in on hand inventory as much as possible  by spring of 2025

Attention to Detail

Beginning with top grade 10/12oz harness leather, all straps and components that will construct our saddles are drawn out by hand. Each strap is then individually edged to ensure smooth, round edges. All major components, the britchen, shaped breast collar and hip pad, are edged, hand burnished and turned rough out to ensure the smoothest fit and comfort for your stock. Solid brass or Stainless Steel hardware and handset copper rivets are used throughout every saddle we build as well we never use plated hardware.

For increased strength, two rivets are used for attaching each strap on our saddles and our quarter straps are doublefolded over the britchen dee ring adding twice the life to one of the most commonly worn out portions of the decker. Additionally, our breast collars are wedged at the snap to prevent twisting and the ever present problem of rubbing hair off your pack stock’s shoulders.

We use only the best 100% mohair cinches, handbraided onto stainless steel rings. We offer two different styles of half breeds as well: Leather bound #4 duck canvas or a breathable Scrim model that helps save on weight and is very durable. Each halfbreed comes stuffed with a two inch thick sheet of rubberized filter material that provides great cushioning from loads and will never mold, mildew or rot. Finally, every one of our decker saddles is built upon one of our handmade cottonwood trees.
